Yes, indeed. This is the most crucial and longest 20 mins someone could evert have. 300 million miles is very long for 7 mins of descent data to reach earth. Successful or not?…that is the very question everyone at NASA JPL will be expecting.
Though we have nailed previous missions (Mars 2020 Perseverance twin Curiosity lands on Mars), this time around will of high expectation.
The Final Phase
By now Mars 2020 Perseverance have undergone two or three TCM’s already. These Trajectory Correction Maneuvers are necessary to precisely put the probe into Mars orbit for eventual landing in Jezero Crater.
jezero – is a village and a municipality located in western Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In several Slavic languages, jezero means ‘lake’ Jezero, Bosnia and Herzegovina Welcome to another edition of trackingperseverance.com info-graphic. Here we are going to dig into the details and numbers of Mars 2020 destination
|Date (subject to change)||Trajectory Correction Maneuvers||Activity|
|Aug. 14, 2020
15 days after launch
|✔TCM-1||Point spacecraft toward Mars, fine-tune its flight path after launch.|
|Sept. 30, 2020
62 days after launch
|Dec. 18, 2020
62 days before landing
|✔TCM-3||To make sure the spacecraft travels at the right speed and direction to arrive at the correct location at the top of the Martian atmosphere before landing.|
|Feb. 10, 2021
8.6 days before landing
|TCM-4||Refine flight path.|
|Feb. 16, 2021
2.6 days before landing
|Feb. 17, 2021
1.6 days before landing
|TCM-5X||Backup maneuver, if needed.|
|Feb. 18, 2021
9 hours before landing
|TCM-6||Contingency maneuver, if needed. Final opportunity to adjust where the spacecraft will enter the Mars atmosphere.|
Fine-Tuning the Flight Path to Mars takes several phases and some backup phases. Check marks are all green. Comes February will be the start of the most crucial phase which is the Entry, Descent, and Landing.
In this crucial phase the probe will under series of carefully synchronized steps. This are precise operations making sure Mars 2020 Perseverance rover achieve optimal landing spot awareness. It’s been subjected to mass grabbing Earth’s gravity, intense space environment and hostile Martian atmosphere. It should and will land on Jezero crater on Mars.
I See a parachute
Just like candy, and by that you’ll know Mars 2020 Perseverance is closing in on the sweet spot.
Several hours have been made to test, simulate and validate that perfect cone goal. Come Feb 18, 2021 on Mars is the real validation of all the hard work. It’s not a wind tunnel environment anymore. The mass of nylon, Technora and Kevlar fibers that make up the parachute will play an integral part in landing NASA’s state-of-the-art Mars 2020 rover on the Red Planet in February 2021.
It’s not just the Rover
Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover maybe the star of this show. But, let’s not forget the many “actors” who played and will play an important role in this Scientific marvel. The man-hours that have been rendered, maybe some sleepless nights in fixing problems in creating and preparing the rover for launch, cruise in space and eventual landing on Mars.
We have gone a long way, and we’re not done yet. We have so much to do. Though we are not part of the crew, our enthusiasm is a key part in the progression of this mission and future exploration to be successful. This fuel encouragement and perseverance to continue move forward and taking those many steps for us to cruise in our technological dreams.
